booking
We want every subject to have as much time in the photo shoot as needed for John to create great work. That is why we typically book only one to three shoots a day, depending on the needs of each shoot. Not only do we want you to have great portraits, we want you to have fun doing it.

Museum Prints:

We have only one quality, that is our best. Museum Prints are printed in the studio to meet or exceed the quality and archival standards museums require. We spend hours and sometimes days on each original print.

preparation
Clothing and props are very important considerations for your shoot. Shown below is a list of general guidelines to help. For a consultation by phone or at the studio please call us. A wardrobe stylist is also available to go through your closets or shop for the perfect outfit. Her rate is $50 an hour.
clothing:
  • Please bring the clothing you wish to be photographed in pressed and on hangers. More than one outfit is highly recommended!
  • For black and white portraits John prefers wonderful textures, solids and interesting patterns (as long as they do not conflict with other clothing in the shoot). Dark colors are great. Whites will work nicely if they are textured. Contrasting shades  and colors are recommended for groups to create a distinction between the subjects.
  • In color portraits striking colors which look good on the subject are encouraged. Often, picking up the eye color or skin tone works well. In group shots all of the clothing needs to coordinate so that it looks good together. That does not mean that everyone needs to be matchy-matchy. Each person has a personality and should show that in some way.
  • Little girl’s floral dresses are an example of patterns which work. Stripes are less likely to work well.
  • Whites are fine, but please do not bring only white clothing.
  • When in doubt bring blacks, dark colors and denim.
  • Make sure that shoes are clean, newish and go with the clothing. Kids rarely need shoes in studio shoots.

props:

  • We have a few props in the studio, but props personal to you make more meaningful photographs.
  • chairs
  • favorite books
  • uniforms
  • sports equipment.
  • favorite toys

women:
  • Accessories (belts, scarves, jewelry, earrings, etc.).
  • Makeup for photo shoots is different than what one would normally wear so we highly recommend a makeup artist. Makeup takes around one hour and costs about $125 for one person. Please let us know in advance if you would like us to book one for you.
men:
  • Please be freshly shaven.
  • Please bring clothing you are to be photographed in and change into them here. Many shoots have been compromised by wrinkled clothing, even if under a jacket
kids:
  • Always bring more than one outfit, if for no other reason than accidents.
  • Props are great!
  • Hats for babies are usually cute.
  • Halloween costumes highly encouraged.
  • Kids rarely need shoes in studio shoots.

 pets:

  • washed
  • brushed
  • walked
  • treats
  • no more than one cat in a portrait. Trust us on this one.

faq

Black and white or color? How do I decide?Because John is known for his black and white, many people think that is all he does. In reality, he loves color, and it comprises about half of his work. He has complete, in-studio, control over all printing. So, both black and white and color are great options. It really comes down to which style you want. Take a look at his portfolio to see what you like and what fits your style. You may decide to shoot both. It will take a little more time and cost a bit more, but he does it all the time. If you are flexible, some subjects and lighting inspire one or the other. Do come with an idea of which one you would like most. John tends to light each differently.

Location vs studioStudio is about classic simplicity and beautiful lighting. John can light a subject perfectly in the studio and there are no weather concerns.

Location shoots bring other wonderful elements into the photo. Interesting landscapes and lovely natural light are just two of the reasons to choose a location shoot. If the location you choose has a special meaning, it can add even more depth to the photo. Some examples are: grandmother's garden, a favorite park or the weekend ranch. John also travels some in the summers, so keep an eye on the calendar or ask for a special travel location.

What do we wear? Please see the preparation section under booking for a list of ideas, or call the studio and we will discuss it. We also have a wardrobe consultant who can come look through your closets or go shopping for you. Her rate is $50 an hour.

Why do a bridal portrait?

A great bridal portrait takes a few hours. To catch all of the beautiful details of a white on white dress and find your best angles takes specific lighting, for which John is a master.

It is also a great dress rehearsal for wearing your dress, hair and make-up. Many times this is the only time all of these elements are put together before the wedding. You want to spend your wedding day focused on your groom, family and guests. I have seen weddings ruined by photographers taking too much time taking pictures when the bride and groom want to be at their party.
